You may have observed that after some brutal terrorist attacks by either ISIL/ISIS or Boko Haram many Muslims publicly denounce them as unIslamic, that they are not representative of Islam. This article takes a look at how new media technologies are aiding rebranding of Islam; factors which inform such posture, and the dangers of snobbishly ignoring or uncritically accepting such media positioning at face value. The piece also takes a survey of Boko Haram’s drawing of the historical trajectories of the use of scriptures for their modernly brutish jihad agenda.
